Mobile Banking APP

We designed a brand new banking APP for one of the top 5 banks. This project started with the early-stage research to identify the app's position, as well as workshops for ideation and product backlog prioritization. Upon conclusion of this stage, we proposed a design solution for the app and are presently developing the app within a multi-disciplinary team.

Challenge

This has been the most challenging project I've done due to its complexity. We have had to clarify the business goals, product position and target audience with the client and make sure that everyone remains on the same page. In addition, designers have had to learn domain knowledge and cooperate with multidisciplinary teams.

Reflection

In the past eight months, I learnt some important takeaways from this project, not only related to design but also project management. 

  • Begin with the end in mind

It is crucial to clarify the goal of the tasks so that we can plan the most efficient way to achieve it. Once we see the whole picture, we can prioritize the tasks properly within a limited time.

  • Be one step ahead

​As a consultant, we should consider different conditions and plan ahead. Most importantly, we should emphasize our clients' needs and take the initiative to solve their problems to create a sense of trust.

  • Maintain consistency across team members

​When collaborating with multiple team members, it is essential to keep everyone on the same page and build the guideline to follow. Also, it is better to sync up with each other regularly to make sure we are on the right track.

What's Next?

Our design proposal has received recognition from the management team and we have moved on to the design stage by Scrum development techniques. Here are the main challenges we are facing:

  • Define business rules

Due to the lack of the updated documents of the existing features, designers need to gather the relevant knowledge sources across different departments to piece together a complete picture of business rules.

  • Build the workflow with multidisciplinary parties

In addition to our clients, we also need to work with other outsourcing teams and learn how to distribute responsibilities and track progress. We spent lots of time improving workflow and productivity.

  • Design consistency

There are 3 UX designers and 2 UI designers in this project and we need to deliver designs within a short time. As a result, we need to build a design process to increase collaboration and ensure the consistency of design.
